Spain Can Retain Title as King of the Sports World
2010-08-26 | 03:50:02 pm
Spain's reign as kings of the sports world this year can be assured by retaining their title at the upcoming basketball world championship.

The country's national football team finally won the World Cup last month, shortly after tennis star Rafael Nadal completed his second French Open-Wimbledon double in three years and Alberto Contador won his third Tour de France title in four years.

Now, the pressure is on the basketball team, which will have to play without star center Pau Gasol, who has decided to take a break from competition. The tournament starts Saturday in Turkey, and Spain will be the team to beat.

"They're a great team, whoever plays," Gasol said. "They're preparing very well and I hope they can emulate that in the tournament. It'll be tough but they look prepared to keep winning more titles."

Obama assembles basketball dreamteam
2010-08-09 | 04:05:41 pm
President Barack Obama pulled together an informal dream team of current and former basketball superstars Sunday. But only a few people got to see it.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and other NBA all-stars joined Obama in Washington to entertain wounded troops.

The present-day stars were joined by some retired legends, including Bill Russell and Magic Johnson. College player Maya Moore of the Connecticut Huskies women's team also played.

The game was played for a group of "wounded warriors" — troops injured in action — and participants in the White House's mentoring program. It took place at a gym inside Washington's Fort McNair, a short drive from the White House. The president was inside the gym for about two hours.

Ikeda showed off skills by shooting one-under-par 71
2010-07-28 | 12:12:17 pm
Chihiro Ikeda showed off the skills that brought her numerous victories by shooting a one-under-par 71 to tie Arizona's Kristen Schelling and Australian Alison Whitaker at second in the 80th Women's Trans Amateur Championship in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ikeda, who has not been on the winning track in various international stints in two months, was in-form all day. The Filipina-Japanese's 71 is one of the best scores she had recorded in a couple of tournaments. Along with Schelling and Whitaker, they're one shot behind Ashley McKenney of Arizona.

The former Philippine national amateur champion is actually fighting for the top seeding in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier before the competition shifts to match play on Wednesday.

Dottie Ardina, a finalist in the Women's Wester GA National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota, submitted an even par 72 for fifth spot, a slot she shares with Eleana Collins of North Carolina.

Boozer now an official Bulls
2010-07-09 | 03:32:47 pm
Carlos Boozer agreed to a deal reportedly worth $75 million over five years on Thursday. The team did not disclose the exact terms, after formally transferring to the Chicago Bulls.

"I feel we have the talent here to begin competing for a title and I cannot wait to get started," Boozer said.

Boozer is expected to compliment point guard Derrick Rose and forward Joakim Noah nicely. Chicago signed the free agent with the hope he would be able get them into the second round of the playoffs after two consecutive first round exits.

The Bulls had also tried but failed to convince Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to switch teams.

"We are confident that his skill set, toughness and leadership are all qualities that make him a great fit for the Bulls, and he will add a low-post element to our team that we have been searching for," Bulls general manager Gar Forman.

Johnson to stay with Atlanta, Hawks
2010-07-05 | 06:11:19 pm
NBA All-Star guard Joe Johnson has agreed to a maximum contract that will keep him with the Atlanta Hawks, his agent said Sunday.

Arn Tellem confirmed an entry he wrote for the Huffington Post website, saying Johnson "announced his intention to re-sign with the Hawks for six more years."

Tellem wrote that Johnson, who could have signed as a free agent with another team, chose to remain in Atlanta over Chicago and New York, where he would have been reunited with Mike D'Antoni, his former coach in Phoenix.

Under NBA rules, a team is allowed to pay more to keep a free agent than other teams can offer in salary if he opts to move.

In addition to the financial incentive, the Hawks have reached the second round of the playoffs the past two years, and Tellem said Johnson believed winning in Atlanta "would be more meaningful."

Lakers fans gathered to cheer on win
2010-06-22 | 04:54:10 pm
Tens of thousands of jubilant Los Angeles Lakers fans lined a two-mile route, many waving purple and gold flags and T-shirts that read "Back 2 Back" as they cheered the NBA champions during a parade to celebrate the team's second consecutive title.

Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Derek Fisher, Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest waved Monday to the throngs from a flatbed 18-wheeler as fans yelled and snapped pictures. Many waited hours for a glimpse of their heroes as they rolled past in a convoy that also included double-decker buses and fire engines.

Police reported a largely well-behaved crowd. Seven people were arrested for various minor offenses, police said. Authorities did not provide a crowd estimate.

The hourlong parade capped a season that ended Thursday with an 83-79 Game 7 victory over the Boston Celtics and a 16th NBA title for the Lakers.
